Alabama's newly passed "Redeemer Act" will now allow some convictions to be expunged.

The new law will allow many people with convictions for nonviolent misdemeanors, minor traffic violations and municipal ordinance offenses to apply for expungement. To become eligible, they have to complete probation requirements, pay their fines and fees and wait three years.

An expungement is like a marriage annulment, but for arrests and convictions. It essentially means the prosecution never officially happened. All information about the case is wiped from public records and can only be used for investigative or law enforcement purposes.
